Around 2 a.m. on Thursday morning, 60 year-old Danny Roy Baker went on a shooting spree at another home in his Miramar Beach Community. He grabbed his rifle, walked across his Summer Lake Townhomes complex and opened fired at several people inside a neighbor’s home, leaving two dead and three critically injured. Although police have not confirmed any causes for Baker’s actions, many residents in the area believe that this atrocious incident was based on his strong dislike of immigrants. One neighbor testifies that Baker approached her once, asking her if she was ready for a revolution and if she had any immigrants in her home she should ask them to leave. This shooting is yet another example of the tragic results that can arise out of xenophobia. As a nation, we must educate the population at large to eradicate negative stereotypes that undoubtedly contributes to such behavior.
