The Presidents comments this week were very encouraging but we can not sit by an wait for the government to do the right thing; we must demand it. In that spirit Democracia AHORA has began a series of visits to our legislators here in Central Florida today. Democracia AHORA organized several meetings including with the offices of Alan Grayson, Suzanne Kosmas, Bill Posey, Adam Putnam, and will be supporting allied organizations in meetings with others such as Virginia Brown-Waite. We must let our legislators now that our community needs this change and can’t wait another year or two.
Democracia AHORA along with the Florida Immigrant Coalition, the Farmworkers Association of Florida, and others were warmly received by the staff of Congressman Alan Grayson. We were able to share our stories and concerns and the urgency for reform now and generally found a receptive ear. While the congressman was unavailable to comment, we have a commitment to meet with him in person next month. This is just the beginning of a long journey that will take us to the fair and humane comprehensive immigration reform that our community and our families so desperately need.
