The Risks for Democrats Going it Alone on Health Care
Max Baucus unveiled his bill last week. His finance committee begins its formal mark-up of the legislation tomorrow. And still no Republicans have signed on. Despite the Montana Senator’s unshakable confidence that his push for bipartisanship will bear fruit, it is looking increasingly likely that Democrats will have to go it alone on health care – or at least virtually alone, with Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, the one moderate Republican who has remained open to supporting the bill. Walking down the corridors of the Senate last Thursday I encountered a senior Senate Democratic aide whistling Simon & Garfunkel’s classic, “I Am a Rock,” the lyrics to which, he noted bemusedly, Democrats should take to heart.

He tells Univision’s “Al Punto” show that if undocumented immigrants want to buy insurance, that’s a matter to be settled with insurance companies. But he does not think they should be able to participate in insurance exchanges set up under the new health care plan.

Viewpoint: Health care reform debate
The debate about immigration reform has begun, and yet we are not even close to debating immigration reform yet. As Congress attempts to restructure the health care system, the issue of a public option, which seemed to be the detonator that threatened to implode the effort, has now given way to one of the most polarizing issues of our times: immigration.
