Don’t Get Between a Latina and her Cabinet

California Congresswoman Hilda Solis has had to live by the virtue of patience the last few weeks. After getting grilled during her Senate confirmation hearing, partially over her husband’s business tax issues, she finally appears poised to be confirmed by the Senate as U.S. Labor Secretary.

Congresswoman Solis’ journey is very American and quintensentially Latina. A daughter of labor, her journey as a community activist has led her to Congress and a national voice for Hispanics, immigrants and working people. No one could have ventured on this path without a strong belief that only long-term committment leads to social change. So while the confirmation process has been oddly stretched out, Solis surely understands the impact she can have on working families warrants a bit more patience. Amen.
